The only scheduled activities during the weekend are the morning and
evening bird walks (8:30 AM and 6:00 PM) on Saturday and Sunday. These
will meet at the front of the Cove Ridge Center which is past the
swimming pool. The morning walks are normally about 1 1/2 hour along the
birding trail around the hill at the blockhouse. This trail goes through
several different types of habitat and usually produces a variety of
resident and migrants, including Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting,
Grasshopper Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, White-eyed Vireo, Brown
Thrasher, and many more. After the morning walk on Saturday, there
will be an informal presentation on "Introduction to Bird Watching" on
the back deck of the Cove Ridge Center. The deck overlooks a wooded area
that makes it great for bird watching also. The evening bird walks may
take in other areas at the park such as the trail along Stock Creek or
in the campground.
The afternoons are not scheduled, but we may go for walks along the
trails in the park. The cliff face at the tunnel itself usually has come
Common Ravens hanging out. This is a great opportunity to enjoy some of
the wildflowers along Stock Creek below the tunnel.
Let me know if you are planning to come and I will send you directions.
The park is off of VA 871 about a mile east of US 23 about 10 miles
north of Gate City. If you let me know when you are coming, we will be
looking for you. This has been a weekend of good birding and relaxation.
Come join us.
