Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC), Midway, Greene Co., TN
David Kirschke did a fine piece of birding this morning to find the rails at
WMDC. Thanks to his timely post, I was able to learn about his sightings and
re-visit the area with him this evening. We found the following:
Virginia Rail (at least 4, third pond)
Sora (at least 1, third pond)
Black-bellied Plover
Semipalmated Plover
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Semipalmated Sandpiper (4)
The plumage of the Virginia Rails (most, anyway) appeared very dark, suggesting
either immature birds or birds moving into adult plumage. The underparts
showed very little reddish, and some blackish mottling was apparent. At least
one bird was extremely dark below, with some whitish on the throat, breast, and
belly.
The Sora was quite buffy below and appeared also to be an immature. I could
detect no gray on the throat or breast. The bill was a muddy yellow color.
