On Sunday I, Bill Cawood, traveled to Blacksburg VA to see my nephew at VT. On
the way I saw a pair of pileated woodpeckers flying along alt Rte 58 at
Virginia City, between St. Paul & Coeburn, VA.
On Monday while showing my class some plants we were serenaded by: red-eyed
vireo, 2 ovenbirds, eastern towhee, Northern cardinal, phoebe.
Today while looking for more plants with the same class we heard/saw: pileated
woodpecker, white-eyed vireo, red-eyed vireo, 3 eastern towhees, tree swallows,
eastern bluebird, American crow, European starling, American robin, English
sparrow, chimney swift, turkey vulture, possible hooded warbler (I only heard
it once, faintly and a student was talking in my ear...)
All birds on Monday & Tuesday were found within 100 meters of Powell Valley
High School in Big Stone Gap, VA.
