I observed the following yesterday in Greene County while participating
in our chapter's spring count; (final numbers are not in yet, but it
appears that the chapter species total is 124--on the high side of
totals for the last few years)--
Ruffed Grouse (drumming on Round Knob);
American Bittern (at Wal-Mart Distribution Center);
Great Blue Heron (at least 4 adults with at least 7 juveniles at the
heronry located on the Nolichuckey River at the intersection of Pate's
Hill Road and Jackson Hollow Road);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (adjacent to West Greene High School; this is the
23rd consecutive month ECDO has been observed here);
Chuck-will's-widow (6 at 5 sites);
Whip-poor-will (19 on Round Knob);
Yellow-throated Vireo (5);
Cliff Swallow (148+ at Allen's Bridge, Bewley's Bridge, and Easterly
Bridge, all located along the Nolichuckey River; this is a high total
for Greene County, where the species has been increasing in numbers in
recent years);
Kentucky Warbler (3);
Summer Tanager (9);
Orchard Oriole (24).
