While afield with Randy Smith and Ron Harrington today (5/24) we saw a large
Red-tailed Hawk's nest with two nearly-fledged nestlings. An adult bird was
perched on the tower near the nest. It was seen to go to the nestlings. The
nest was located on the middle crossbar platform of a high tension electrical
transmission tower. The nest is maybe as much as a 70 to 90 feet above the
ground. The tower stands in a farm pasture near the Norfolk Southern Railway
in the Wyndale section between Bristol and Abingdon in Washington County, Va.
This is the first Red-tail nest I have seen on a transmission tower in this
region.
Let's go birding.......
