[Bristol-Birds] Late Common Loon at Hidden Valley Lake

A Common Loon in mostly basic plummage was observed today (5/23) on Hidden
Valley Lake near the top of Brumley Mountain west of Abingdon in Washington
Co., Va.
This bird is within a couple of days of the last average date for the species
to linger in Virginia before heading north. It was found by Ron Harrington and
Wallace Coffey.

It is possibly later than the latest published spring date for Southwest
Virginia. If anyone knows of anything later, please let us know.

It is possible to see a Common Loon every month of the year on Tennessee Valley
Authority mountain lakes in Northeast Tennessee. It is usually gone from the
region by late April to the end of May. We have about a dozen summer records
of Common Loons in Northeast Tennessee.

Let's go birding.....
