Area Birders,
This morning my wife and I went searching for the SWAINSON'S WARBLER, that we
were sure should have returned to Buchanan County by now. We went to the Head
of Slate Creek, a hollow to the east of Compton Mt, where a creek runs through
rhododendron thickets and tall hemlocks. After stopping and listening at 3 or 4
locations with no luck, we finally heard the clear, sweet, call of a male
Swainson's Warbler coming from a rhododendron thicket. We moved closer and
waited. He kept singing, and after what seemed like a long time he moved to the
edge of the thicket, where we were able to get good looks, and I was lucky
enough to get some photos. He remained mostly in the shadows, as Swainson's are
known to do, so the photos were a bit difficult.
You can view the Swainson's photos at

We also heard several HOODED WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED GREENS, OVENBIRDS, A
NORTHERN PARULA, BLUE-HEADED VIREOS and RED-EYED VIREOS.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
