I found two nests today in tree branches overhanging Whirlwing Rd. near the 4-H
Center. Both can be observed from the same vantage point beside the road. The
first found belonged to some Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. The pair was seen
changing places on the nest. The sitter can easily be seen from the road, as
its tail and head stick out, and the road rises to give a good angle - you can
usually see the sitter's eye. The second nest was in an adjacent tree to the
first. A female Ruby-throated Hummingbird flew in and out of the nest, and
often perched on branches nearby. I don't think its nest was quite finished,
but nearly so. Both nests were made with what looked to be the same kind of
lichen.
