Golden Eagle Breeding Search in Highland County [Virginia]- Volunteers and
Donors Needed! "The Golden Chase" is a project to track Golden Eagles in
Highland County via satellite and radio transmitters, organized by Patti Reum,
owner of Bear Mountain Farm and Wilderness Retreat. Patti has linked up with
Dr. Todd Katzer of the National Aviary in Pittsburgh to capture the Golden
Eagles and track their movements to determine if they breed in Highland. Even
though Golden Eagles have been viewed during every season in Highland there is
no known documented breeding of Goldens east of the Mississippi River.
Therefore the research gathered will be crucial to conservation planning. If
you'd like to help on this project you have two options: 1) Make a tax
deductible contribution to The Virginia Society of Ornithology, 1230 Viewmont
Drive, Evington VA 24550. Please make checks payable to "VSO" and include a
note that the money is in support of The Golden Chase project. 2) Form a
birding team to participate in the Golden Chase - a classic birdathon that will
take place May 19, 2007. There will be several private properties available to
teams to count, all of which are high altitude Virginia properties renowned for
their wildlife - and hold many enticing possible species such as Sharp-shinned
Hawk, Northern Goshawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Northern Saw-whet Owls, Long-eared
Owls, Ruffed Grouse, Black-billed Cuckoos, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Winter
Wrens, scads of warblers, Vesper Sparrows, Purple Finch, Pine Siskins, and Red
Crossbills. There is so-little known about migration in this area that the
species list itself will be important to define presence and estimate abundance
in this far corner of Virginia. For more information please contact Patti Reum,
Chair, The Golden Chase Project, at bearmountain@xxxxxxxxxx or (540) 468-2700.
