The Prairie Warbler is a breeding species in the Ridge and Valley and mountains
up to 3,500 feet elevation.
The TWRA access area located between Musick's Campground and Painter Creek Boat
Dock at South Holston Lake in Sullivan Co. is, in fact, a breeding locality
for the Prairie Warbler.
A few years ago, Larry McDaniel, Rob Biller, Ron Carrico and I found an active
nest in one of the low pines on the northeast side of the road.
Succession has altered the habitat for the Prairie Warbler at this location.
The site once had a significant number of nesting pairs.
Let's go birding......

zjrj5@xxxxxxxxx and all,
The TWRA access area which afforded me an early tic for the Prairie Warbler
species is a public boat loading ramp located half way between Musick's
Lakeside Campground and Painter Creek Boat dock off Painter Creek Road at South
Holston Lake. I have not known the species to nest in this area before and
think the individual I observed may have been a transient migrant. The small
pine stand between the lake and the ramp parking area is a good place to check
for spring and fall migrants.
