Looking to enjoy winter birds at South Holston Lake again before they
depart, and hoping for a few spring arrivals, I visited Musick's
Lakeside Campground (MLC), Osceola Island Recreation Area (OIRA),
Middlebrook Lake, and various other nearby sites on the morning of
Sunday, April 9. Numbers were down from the fallout reported the day
before, and I could not find the American White Pelicans that were
reported by local birders on Saturday. However, my trip was well worth
the time spent. Here's an abbreviated list:
Gadwall (5--3 ML, 2 OIRA);
Ring-necked Duck (3--2 ML, 1 OIRA);
Bufflehead (41 OIRA and environs);
Red-breasted Merganser (6 MLC, on both sides of the state line);
Common Loon (5 (some in breeding plumage) MLC--4 in TN, 1 in VA);
Horned Grebe (1 in breeding plumage MLC, on both sides of the state line);
Pied-billed Grebe (9--8 in Sullivan Co., 1 in VA);
American Coot (12 ML);
Ring-billed Gull (88+ Sullivan Co., 75+ in VA);
Bonaparte's Gull (25+ (some in breeding plumage) MLC and Painter Creek
embayment);
Cooper's Hawk;
Broad-winged Hawk (OIRA);
Tree Swallow (53+ Sullivan Co., 2+ in VA);
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (11);
Barn Swallow (2);
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (2);
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2);
Brown Thrasher (2);
Blue-headed Vireo (South Holston Dam);
Yellow-throated Warbler (2 Sullivan Co.--1 Painter Creek embayment, 1
South Holston Dam);
Pine Warbler (2);
Black-and-white Warbler (near South Holston Dam);
Chipping Sparrow (4);
White-crowned Sparrow (MLC).
