I received the following from a new Bristol resident. The sighting was on Watauga Lake (Carter County).
Bill Grigsby
Kingsport, TN

Hi. I'm not a member, but my husband and I are amateur birders in Bristol. Our kids are both in college, so we have been considering a group for more company. Anyhow, my husband runs a route everyday from Bristol through past Hampton, and had claimed since Monday to see a common loon every day but one on Watauga. I scoffed and called him all but a liar. This evening he took me out there and we pulled in the first pull off at Shook Park, and by gosh there it was! We observed a couple hours of coasting, diving, preening, and beating of wings such as loons do. It had very little winter plumage left. I got two pictures when it was closest which was about 150 feet. We drove the coastline pull-offs for about 10 miles, but observed nothing else. The loon was still at Shook when we left for the night. The only thing I regret was the absence of calls. Have you ever heard of such a thing? I am from MI, but have been here for over 20 years and have not. Thanks for your consideration.
