Area Birders,
Eleven members of the Buchanan County Bird Club spent the day(4/16) birding the
Breaks Interstate Park on the VA - KY border. The day began with birders having
breakfast in the lodge with a magnificent view of the gorge, with the mountains
highlighted by the morning sun.
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was the first warbler of the day as we were leaving
the lodge. This was the first of 6 warbler species that would be found during
the outing - BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER 9, BLACK-THROATED GREEN 4, HOODED WARBLER
3, NORTHERN PARULA 2, OVENBIRD 8, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER 5. At one point there
were 3 Black-and-white Warblers around us at once. A male Hooded Warbler gave
everyone great looks as it sang in a tree just over our heads, and Ovenbirds
could heard at several locations. Five BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were found singing
throughout the park, and 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were observed catching
insects in the fresh green foliage of the tree tops. One male PILEATED
WOODPECKER came in close giving great looks, and others could be heard drumming
on hollow trees throughout the day.
We had good looks at 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS; one was just overhead as it circled
and hunted among the tall trees along the edge of the canyon. From one of the
overlooks a couple of RED-TAILED HAWKS could be seen over a distant ridge, and
2 TURKEY VULTURES made flying look easy as they glided far below us over the
Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River.

As the day came to a close some birders went back to the lodge for another
meal, while others picnicked at outside tables to the song of a Yellow-throated
Warbler and the trills of Chipping Sparrows. It was an excellent day to be out
and the birding was good. Thirty-two species were logged. For those interested
the day's complete list follows.
