In the Appalachian forests, under rocks and rotting logs and in rock crevices
you will find the various species of the lungless salamanders, the most
abundant vertebrates in eastern North America. Molecular techniques are
revealing new species and complex patterns of genetic differentiation in these
animals, and are enhancing our appreciation of the southern Appalachians as a
center of biodiversity. Tilley is a professor of biology at Smith College in
Northampton, Massachusetts, and one of the leading experts on salamanders in
the world. He is frequently a summer faculty member at the Highlands Biological
Station in western North Carolina. You will truly enjoy this talk and your eyes
will be opened to the dramatic salamanders that inhabit the southern
Appalachians. Don't miss this talk for any reason !
