Area Birders,
Spring arrivals were feeding in and around my yard today giving me a total
of 29 species before 11:00 AM.
One single male RUBY-THROAT was the only hummer. 5 PURPLE FINCHES were at
the feeder, as well as one PINE SISKIN. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO sang at the edge
of the woods, and a male SCARLET TANAGER sat for a few minutes in the top of
the walnut tree in the backyard. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER fed in a White
Pine, and a YELLOW WARBLER worked its way through the new buds of a maple
tree.
A female PILEATED WOODPECKER worked on a large mulbery stump on the knoll
above the house. A TREE SWALLOW made a few circles overhead, and Two pairs
of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS,one pair in the backyard, and one in front, eagerly
gobbled up the mealworms I offered.
One of the two resident BROWN THRASHERS searched under the shrubs for
insects, and a couple of NORTHERN FLICKERS probed the lawn for ants or
grubs. A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS called from the top of a dead snag
in the field, where they have excavated a nest cavity.
