Area Birders:
Yes! It is would at first seem to be astonishing that a pair of Carolina
Wrens have built their nest in a screech owl nesting box in my yard. It
would seem they would know better. You'd think that is a dangerous risk.
It is in some ways.
Actually, the owl box is one from Musick's Campground that I have been
promising Mae Musick that Bert Hale and I would get a lid put on it and
return it to her campground. The box belongs to Mae.
No. Actually, the box is laying on its side on top of a seldome used
plastic trash can in my driveway and has no lid.
The wrens have been fuzzing at me around the driveway for several days. I
knew they were probably nesting. This evening before sunset, I was taking
my big trash container out to the street for the city workers to empty when
one of the wrens flushed out of the owl box atop another nearby container.
Yep. A quick check revealed the nest but I don't think it is a safe site
from cats, etc. And a night driveway light burns there until 3 a.m. when
the timer cuts off. I hope the possum which lives behind my wall or the
'coon that sometimes comes to my porch does't find an easy meal. I don't
think the coyote which ran thru my yard a year or two ago is still around.
But from the looks of whitewash on my driveway and walkway, I think a
screech owl is using the old woodpecker hole near my porch. I've seen it
there before but not in the last year.
What do I know?
Let's go birding...
