Janace and I spent three days exploring the Smokies and making stops in
between there and Kingsport. Some of the good things that we saw were
Sunday (4/4)
Dutch Bottoms: American White Pelicans (5), Double Crested Comorants
(30),
GSMNP (Roaring Fork Drive) Black-throated Green Warblers (2)
Monday (4/5)
Clingman's Dome Rd: Ruffed Grouse (m-1)
Tuesday (4/6)
Chimneys Picnic Area: Blue-headed Vireo, Black-throated Green Warbler
and tons of wildflowers (see below)
Alum Cave Bluffs Trail: Black-capped Chickadee, Blue-headed Vireo,
Dark-eyed Junco
Wednesday (4/7)
West Prong of Pigeon River behind Tanger Outlets: Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Eastern Bluebird, Yellow-rumped Warbler
Tailwaters of Douglas Dam: Great Blue Heron (25+ ), Great Egret (1),
Black-Crowned Night Heron (8), Osprey (2+), Red-tailed Hawk (2),
Ring-billed Gull. Note: this is a very good place with good habitat for
other species.
I believe that all of these were in Sevier County, TN.
Wildflowers in the GSMNP (at Chimneys Picnic Area): Yellow Trillium,
Sharp-lobed Hepatica, Virginia Spring Beauty, True Solomon's Seal,
Yellow Woodland Violet, Dutchman's Breeches, Rue Anemone, Bishop's Cap
or Miterwort, Blue Cohosh (in bud).
Bill Grigsby
Kingsport, TN
We stayed in a cabin east of Pigeon Forge and saw/heard many of the
normal woodlands birds there, including Northern Cardinal, Eastern
Towhee, Downy Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren,
Carolina Chickadee.
