Hello area birders,
I saw what I believe to be a Spotted Towhee today. The details are as
follows:
Location: I was hiking the AT from FR222/SR625 up to the AT Shelter at
Chestnut Knob. Right where the trail comes out of the woods and into the
meadow near the ridge top the bird was in a bush on the right side of the
trail. Elevation at this point is about 3600 feet.
Habitat: The bird was perched in a bush about 3 to 4 feet off the ground.
The bush was at the edge of the woods between the woods and the field.
View: I watched the bird for about 5 minutes. It was about 6 feet from me
and just resting in the bush. I had good views in sunlight of the back and
sides of the bird.
Details: I noted that it was a male Towhee and it had 2 white wing bars and
6 rows of white dots on the back, three rows of dots on each side of the
back. The bird was not singing. It was about 11:30 a.m.
The hike up to where this bird was seen is very strenuous as you go up about
1,000 feet in two miles.
Call or email if you want more details on the directions, at 276-773-3168.
I also had 51 other species of birds today on Rt. 42, SR 625 and the AT.
And the view from the shelter of Burkes Garden in green was spectacular.
