[Bristol-Birds] Yellow-crowns, Raven, etc.

Today (4-4) at & near Kingsport:
There were 4 pairs of Yellow-cr. Night-Herons with nests at the greenbelt near
American Way, where recently found by Rick Phillips. A single bird was seen
along the creek behind the hospital, but no visible activity at the nest (first
seen by Marion Finucane). I saw five immature Yellow-crowns at this latter
site during the Tenn. Breeding Bird Atlas on 23 June 1991, but could not find a
nest. This record should have shown as a positive breeding record in the atlas
map.
A Com. Raven was seen in the old quarry on Wahoo Valley Rd., about 1 mile below
Boone Dam. I scanned for, but saw no evidence of, a nest. Part of the quarry
wall is not easily seen. Also, there are some nice cliffs along the river
within sight of this spot. I have seen ravens in this general area several
times in the last 10 years or so.
Additionally, a Peregrine Falcon whizzed by while I was at the nearby boat
ramp. Perhaps it was just a migrant, but always an exciting bird to see.
Local birders should remain alert for additional rookeries of herons or
cormorants as these species continue to increase regionally.
