Bristol Area Birders,
After our astute Buchanan Co. Bird Club member, Michelle Talbott, located
the Lawrence's Warbler yesterday, Ed Talbott, vice president of the club,
and I, decided to try to locate it again early this morning. We were in the
area just after dawn. We didn't have long to wait. We soon started hearing
Blue-wings singing their high pitched buzzing song. We heard two or three of
them and got good looks at a couple. Then Ed's good birding eyes picked up
the Lawrence's not more than a few yards away, but before we could get a
really good look it flew.
Within a few minutes we had relocated it. This time it sat in the top of a
shrub and sang. It was an adult male with black lores, black auriculars and
a black throat patch. With the exception of the parts already mentioned the
head was a bright yellow. The breast and belly were bright yellow as well.
The back was an olive green with two contrasting wing bars. The face was
very striking with the black contrasting with the yellow, which was made
even more impressive by the rays of the early morning sun. Each time this
little fellow would sing he would point his bill skyward and his whole body
would vibrate during the process.
With patience Ed and I managed to get some decent video of the bird. The
markings mentioned can easily be seen in the video.

Some days are just too good to be true.
Roger Mayhorn,
Grundy, VA
