TN Birders,
Late last night I was working late at the computer. I was facing the window
and the motion sensitive light kept coming on because of several moths and a
bat that was having a late dinner.
Suddenly the shepherd's crook that stands about 12 feet from the window and
holds one of my bird feeders gave a violent shake. I got up for a better
look and there on the ground under the feeder was an adult Barred Owl. It
had its back to me, but seemed to be eating something. Within moments it
flew back up to the crook and sat facing me. I had meanwhile turned off the
inside light and had grabbed my video camera. Considering the lighting
conditions I got some pretty good video. It kept looking down at the ground
as if there was something there to eat. It sat there for another couple of
minutes, then flew away. Does anyone know if Barred owls eat earthworms? I
know Screech Owls do. I have seen them pulling the worms from the ground for
their young.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
