I ran up to the lake after work this afternoon and saw some waterbirds that I
have not seen around here in a while, including Wilson's Snipe, Common Loon
(well along in molt), Wood Duck (three males courting a lucky female), and
Osprey. Also on the lake were Bufflehead (4), Hooded Merganser (about 5),
Redhead (1), Ring-neck Duck (about 20), Pied-billed Grebe (about 10), and
American Coot (about 50), not to mention a few geese and mallards. There were
also unusual numbers of Swamp Sparrows present and a Brown Thrasher which I
heard but could not see.
Most of the waterfowl were down towards the dam, as the anglers are making
their annual appearance.
