Greene County--
Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management
Area (JBR);
Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC);
many back roads in the western part of the county, as well as a few
spots near Tusculum and Greeneville
I spent about three and a half hours birding this afternoon and evening
after work. Results were good--
Canada Goose (25);
Gadwall (10 WMDC);
American Wigeon (5 at intersection of Toby Road and Smelser Road);
American Black Duck (2 WMDC);
Mallard (26);
Green-winged Teal (5 WMDC);
Great Blue Heron (3);
Northern Harrier (4);
Red-tailed Hawk (4);
American Kestrel (5);
Wilson's Snipe (28);
American Woodcock (at intersection of Holly Creek Road and Brown's
Bridge Road, in Tusculum);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (3 adjacent to West Greene High School);
Short-eared Owl (JBR; observed in flight and perched, from 5:07 until
5:31; the bird was also observed at JBR on March 8 by Orland and Phine
Britton);
Eastern Phoebe (4);
Purple Martin (4 at intersection of Highway 348 and Gravel Woods Road);
Tree Swallow (JBR);
American Pipit (4 JBR);
Rusty Blackbird (6 on Green Road);
Brewer's Blackbird (12+ along Highway 340 0.2 mile west of Turner Lane;
this has been a reliable spot for BRBL for several years);
Purple Finch (Greeneville).
Also observed: Mourning Cloak butterfly at JBR
