Gilbert Derouen, Reece Jamerson and Bryan Stevens observed a male Northern
Shoveler and 4 Blue-winged Teal as well as 18 American Wigeon and several
Buffleheads and Ring-necked Ducks on the Watauga River at Rasar Farm near
Elizabethton in Carter County on Friday, March 10.
They also saw a flock of 50+ American Pipits and six Tree Swallows in the
fields on the right driving into Rasar Farm.
They also visited Wilbur Lake and observed 37 Redheads, which Brookie and
Jean Potter had told them about. Ring-necked Ducks and Buffleheads are still
present on Wilbur as well as a single Scaup species, probably Lesser.
They also went to Shady Valley, Johnson County, to bird at Quarry Bog and
Orchard Bog. At Quarry Bog they had 101 Mallards, four Wilson's Snipe, one
Rusty
Blackbird, one Eastern Meadowlark, several Tree Swallows and many Red-winged
Blackbirds.
They settled in at Orchard Bog to await American Woodcock. Before then, they
heard two Great Horned Owls and saw a Northern Harrier. They also saw two
Field Sparrows. The Woodcock display never really materialized except for two
or
three clearly heard but isolated "peent" calls.
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
