Another site to add to our growing list of active Great Blue Heron rookeries in
upper east Tennessee. This morning around 11:30 am I was driving down
Netherland Inn road along the S Fork Holston River when I looked over and
noticed a few Great Blue Herons sitting atop what looked like nests on the
island just southwest of the old Netherland Inn. I turned around and got out
for a closer look. Sure enough there were six adult herons and three of them
were standing on stick nests. I counted three active nests and one smaller
nest that could be under construction. I didn't see these nests last week as I
drove by there several times, so it appears this can happen rather quickly.
I'll keep an eye on them and be on the lookout for others. Wallace Coffey
confirms as far as he knows this is a new site.
