Hello Bristol Area Birders -
I have a second job in the evenings working in the Long Distance Education
Department at ETSU (Johnson City, TN - Washington County). I am the on site
technician at the Innovation Center located off campus in the old marine
center that is tucked in behind where they were protesting to save the Beech
Trees (just off the corner of State of Franklin and Market Streets). At 10 PM
EST, I had just locked and set the alarm on the building and was talking to
the
head technician by my car when a BARN OWL squawked over our heads. My friend
said, "That just went over my head didn't it" with total confusion on his
face. I was like, "yep it was a BARN OWL." I explained how they had taken up
permanent residence over at the VA Center and how I hadn't seen them in a
number of years. I am not positive that this one was one of those but it is a
good possibility as the likely source. I would estimate that it is roughly
one-half mile, as the BARN OWL flies, to their location at the VA. I called
Don Holt shortly after this occurred and conferred with him that it wasn't the
normal screech you hear in the bird media, but more of a squawk as it was
flying overhead.
This was another nice year bird for me that has grown considerably over the
past few weeks as have my life bird list. I recently went to the Folly Beach
(Charleston), Huntington Beach, Myrtle Beach area (March 5, 6, and 7) with
Tom and J.T. McNeil where I picked up 5 life birds. The Razorbill was still
present at Huntington Beach, SC along with Purple Sandpipers and Glaucous
Gull. A three Scoter raft (White-winged, Black, and Surf) was just off shore
at
the 2nd Ave (NORTH) Pier. White-winged and Black Scoters were life birds
as well. We had a total of 111 species of birds that weekend.
If this is a sign of things to come as winter winds down - this spring
should be spectacular!
