March 14, 2005
Greene County (mostly in the western end: Midway-Mohawk-McDonald area);
southern Hamblen County (Lowland area);
northern Cocke County (Chuckey Knobs area)
I spent a good while this afternoon attempting to locate the Sandhill
Cranes observed by Don Holt and Dianne Draper yesterday in western
Greene County. Although I searched the cornfields in the Beulah Baptist
Church area and farther west along Highway 340 carefully, I saw nary a
crane. Later on, I ventured briefly into Hamblen and Cocke Counties
hoping to improve my luck, but to no avail.
Nonetheless, the day was quite productive birdwise--just not in terms of
cranes. Here are the highlights:
Wood Duck (9 Greene Co.);
Mallard (54 Greene Co., 5 Hamblen Co.);
Blue-winged Teal (Greene Co. (Green Rd.));
Gadwall (3 Greene Co. (Gravel Woods Rd.));
Green-winged Teal (11 Greene Co.);
American Wigeon (3 Greene Co. (Green Rd.));
Ring-necked Duck (4 Greene Co. (Gravel Woods Rd.));
Greater Scaup (female, Greene Co. (Green Rd.));
Hooded Merganser (2 Hamblen Co., 1 Greene Co.);
Cooper's Hawk (Greene Co.);
Red-tailed Hawk (10 Greene Co., 3 Hamblen Co.);
American Kestrel (7 Greene Co., 2 Hamblen Co., 1 Cocke Co,);
Wild Turkey (21 Greene Co.);
American Coot (6 Greene Co. (Wal-Mart Distribution Center));
Wilson's Snipe (3 Greene Co.);
Tree Swallow (34 Greene Co.);
Horned Lark (Greene Co.);
American Pipit (Greene Co.);
Fox Sparrow (our backyard feeder at home);
Swamp Sparrow (3 Greene Co.);
Rusty Blackbird (19 Greene Co.).
