Area Birders,
16 PURPLE FINCHES (10M,6F)are feeding this morning in the 1 inch of snow,
along with 27 RED-WINGS, 3 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS and others. A PINE SISKIN
was part of the flock yesterday, and an adult COOPER'S HAWK dropped in to
scatter the birds.

There was a stand-off at the platform feeder between a brightly colored
Red-wing male and a male Red-bellied. The Red-wing had wings extended and
epaulets flaring. The red on both birds really stood out against the snow.
The Red-wing scolded while the Red-bellied had his head lowered and just
stared his opponent down. Finally the Red-bellied made a forward lunge with
pointed beak at the ready, and the Red-wing gave way.

The BLUEBIRDS really enjoyed the mealworms I put out for them until one
Red-bellied found the worms and started caching them in any crevice he could
find.

Unfortunately a few cowbirds have moved in with the Red-wings.
