Ed Talbott and Roger Mayhorn:

I am participating in a meeting for several days with wildlife managers
from throughout the Eastern U.S.
Today I had lunch with the Non-Game and Endangered Species Coordinator
fore the state of Kentucky and also with Kentucky's Avian Ecologist.

In regards to the speculation about Ospreys and Great Blue Herons nesting
in the Levisa River as part of the Big Sandy River, they would not expect
that.

Shawchyi Vorisek, Avaian Ecologist for the Wildlife Division of the
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, said they have no
knowledge or records of either Ospreys or Great Blue Herons nesting
anywhere in the Big Sandy Watershed of Kentucky.

Shawchyi said that all of Kentucky's Osprey nesting is in the western part
of the state. Also Great Blue Heron nesting colonies are expanding
rapidly throughout the state but still none known from the Big Sandy /
Lavisa River area.

That does not mean that you will not find either in the Levisa drainage of
Buchanan County. It does mean that we now know there is no present
breeding of those species in that drainage and the extension of those
breeding populations into your part of Virginia is not likely. Keep
looking. Keep up the good work. You may just find great things.
