Thursday, March 6, at Limestone I saw over one hundred HORNED LARKS
beside Keebler Rd, but no Lapland Longspurs. Also on Big Limestone Creek
Road I counted 40 WILSON'S SNIPE by the flooded creek, or at least their
little round heads poking out of the grass.
Friday, March 7, I stopped at Birds Bridge on the Nolichucky River in
Greene Co. to check for amphibians in the flooded slough in the woods there.
It was after 6 pm. I flushed an AMERICAN WOODCOCK. I also spied several
WOOD DUCKS settling in to the slough for the night (and a MUSKRAT).
Saturday, March 8, while participating in the Elizabethton Bird Club
Bluebird workday at Tipton Haynes Farm in Johnson City, I heard an EASTERN
PHOEBE, and identified an ORANGE SULPHUR butterfly that LARRY MCDANIEL saw
first. It was the first non-anglewing butterfly of the year that I had seen
and LARRY MCDANIEL showed it to me. Thank you LARRY MCDANIEL, good spot!!!
Also, later that afternoon, Larry showed Howard Langrich, Allan Trently and I
a stand of SKUNK CABBAGE.
Sunday, March 9, at Bowmantown Wetland, I saw a SAVANNAH SPARROW, three
SWAMP SPARROWS, several RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, a RED-TAILED HAWK, and a
PILEATED WOODPECKER. I was joined by Larry McDaniel. We waited until after
dark but didn't hear any Woodcock or other nocturnal bird spp. We did
however hear SPRING PEEPERS, UPLAND CHORUS FROGS and PICKEREL FROGS. We also
saw a bat that didn't seem to be a Red Bat. It flew with a faster wingbeat
at a higher level and seemed smaller; maybe a Pipistrelle.
