This morning I saw 11 GBH on nests at the rookerie along Butcher's Fork near
its confluence with the South Fork of Powell River near Big Stone Gap, VA.
This is 9 days earlier than I have previously seen them.

Subject: [Bristol-Birds] Great Blue Herons on nests
On 2/07/2008, several Great Blue Herons were on nests just below Fort
Patrick Henry Dam, beside the South Fork of the Holston River. Eight nests
were occupied - six by single herons, two had GBH pairs on them. Several of
the single birds and both pairs were displaying.
This site is between FPH dam and Highway 36 (Ft. Henry Drive) - across the
bridges from the rest of the rookery, which is located on the south bank of the
river, downstream of the dam.
