I checked out some Kingsport birding sites Sunday. Highlights were:
Gadwall - ~30 (The Sluice at the mouth of Horse Creek)
Northern Pintail - 4 (3 males and 1 female, Riverfront Restaurant)
Ring-necked Duck - 1 (The Confluence)
Lesser Scaup - 7 "
Bufflehead - 1 "
Hooded Merganser - 2 "
Double-crested Cormorant - ~10 "
Merlin* - 1 (Oakhill Cemetary)
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 (Riverfront Restaurant - I suspected two, as Rick Knight
reported, but only saw one at a time)
Ring-billed Gull - many along the river
*The Merlin showed up in a timely fashion at the appointed place as described
by Rick Phillips in previous posts. At 5:50 pm it arrived, landed on the top
of a spruce tree, basked in the orange glow of the setting sun for five
minutes, remaining past sunset for another ten minutes, then disappeared.
Thank you, Rick. I felt blessed.
