Area Birders,
My wife, Lynda, and I drove over to Saltville, VA today to see the female
Long-tailed Ducks that had been reported by Alen Boynton this week. Only one of
the ducks was on the pond. In fact, except for a few Canada Geese, the lone
Long-tail was the only waterfowl on the pond. We got great close-up views of
the bird with scope and binos, and I was able to take several photos. I will be
posting some of those later. The white face with the large dark cheek patch was
striking. The bird was constantly diving, staying on the surface no more that
10 seconds or so at a time. Our presence didn't seem to bother it, as it kept
coming to the surface closer and closer to where we stood.
We evidently just missed running into Bob Riggs and Tom and Laverne Hunter. We
were there about 1:30. They were there at 12:00 and 4:00
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
