Hey Mary Jane,
Late last friday I checked out the heronry on Hwy 107 near Clark's Creek
in Washington Co. and saw ten Great Blue Herons on about three and one-half
nests. There was a lot of damage and loss of nests in this heronry this
winter, perhaps from its use as a roost-site by Turkey Vultures all winter.
With
the herons on the nests, the Turkey Vultures Friday were roosting in the trees
a
little further back. The thing I wanted to point out, though, is that just a
few hours earlier that same day, I saw no herons on the site, though I knew
they had begun to use it for the last few weeks. My experience is that the
best time to inventory the heronry is near dawn or dusk.
