It is true, Wallace often mentions your prowess at hawk trapping and I am
inspired and encouraged by your success.
The Launched Avian Restraint Utility System (L.A.R.U.S.) is an ultralight
weight, inexpensive, easy to use and transport method of taking birds of sizes
ranging from European Starlings to, well, Ringed-billed Gulls.
The whole contraption weighs less than one pound at 15.25 oz. requiring added
weight in the partial floor as anchoring. Total cost to build was $15.00 with
enough left over material to build one more complete trap and several partial
ones. The ease of construction required that I have only one tool - scissors!
Granted, I have cooked this idea down for a couple of months on paper.
Starting with concept drawings the night before the Glade Spring CBC and
working
toward efficiency and simplicity. Launching the system from the rear bumper of
van is a method that eliminated several pieces of apparatus in the concept and
added ease to set up and take down.
