[Bristol-Birds] Bull Mountain Hike - Buchanan County, VA

Bristol Birders,
Michelle and I enjoyed a seven mile hike around Bull Mountain
this morning. We found a new area to bird that looks like it
will be hopping with warblers this spring - good habitat for
breeding Blue-winged and Golden-winged Warblers also. Best of
all we were able to make a loop hike out of it by going out the
ridge and coming back on an old strip bench.
Our dog Chazzy led the way, flushing White-throated and Song
Sparrows out of the brush for us. The only other sparrow we saw
was a lone Fox Sparrow. A pair of Red-shouldered Hawks kept us
company for part of the hike as they called loudly and soared out
over the hollow. Woodpeckers made a strong showing with five
species seen (missed the Sapsucker) and Golden-crowned Kinglets
could be heard every hundred yards or so. A small kettle of five
Turkey Vultures was a surprise for this area in February. We
found several flocks of Juncos and one large flock of Robins.
Michelle spotted a Winter Wren that fussed at us when we tried to
get a closer look. We also jumped a total of three Ruffed Grouse
on the hike.
As I am writing this a female Belted Kingfisher just landed on a
limb in my back yard overlooking the Levisa River.
8 Weeks to Warblers!
