Birders:

Nelle Mae Jenkins, 95, of Shady Valley, TN, passed away this morning at
Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, TN. She had been in that hospital
for the past week.

Nelle had been a resident of a Mountain City nursing home before being taken
to Sycamore Shoals.

She will be remembered by many recent birders as the friendly, loving and
kind woman who waved from the porch of her mobile home next to the abandoned
white store building across the road from Orchard Bog in Shady Valley. She
and her husband, Jess Taylor Jenkins (1906-1981), owned both until this
past year. They began operating the store in 1946 and continued until his
death.

Nelle and Jess sold their family cranberry bog to The Nature Conservancy in
August 1979. The tiny 3/10 acre bog was the first ever property purchased
by the conservancy in Tennessee and became the first state project of the
Tennessee Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The family's contribution in
preserving the cranberry bog has become a shrine to the many significant
efforts to restore and manage mountain bogs. It is also the smallest
project by acreage in the history of the conservancy.

Nelle was raised north of Shady Valley in the Sutherland community near
Backbone Rock. She was an active church member and for many years active
with the Shady Valley Senior Citizen Center. She was twice a parade marshal
for the annual Shady Valley Cranberry Festival, the last being this past
October.

She is survived by granddaughter Lorrie Shumate of Shady Valley (her husband
John Shumate is a co-author of "Bird Study in Shady Valley Tennessee
1934-1999.") She ia also survived by one daughter Dot Scott and one son
Caroll Jenkins both of the valley. John and Lorrie are membrs of the
Bristol Bird Club and Lorrie served the BBC as our treasurer for several years.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

We will continue to miss the warmth and friendship of Nelle Jenkins.
