Randy Stanley:

Your news about the rookery in Wise County is good news.
It certainly is exciting.

Since Dick Peake did not mention this rookery in his 2001
book "Birds of the Virginia Cumberlands," I assume the
herons first took up residence there in 2001.

How long as this rookery been located at that site? Can you
give us a nest count as soon as you have a chance?

It is noteworthy that the rookery is not in the Holston River
drainage. The Powell River flows into Norris Reservoir in
East Tennessee.

Good birding news you shared with all of us. Thanks for
the good post. We'll stay tuned for more information as
it is available.

Thanks again.

Let's go birding......

>There is also a small Great Blue Heron rookery located on the South Fork of

>on the left after crossing the river you can see the nests in the trees and
>the herons in them. They have been back for a couple of weeks now.
