There is also a small Great Blue Heron rookery located on the South Fork of
the Powell River in Wise County Virginia to the west of US 23 where it
crosses the river. On your way north on 23 if you look to the small knoll
on the left after crossing the river you can see the nests in the trees and
the herons in them. They have been back for a couple of weeks now.
