Subject: kestrels

I suppose most of you know ALL ABOUT the ETSU kestrel box program that runs
along highway 181 between ~Erwin and Kingsport. There are 25 boxes, (I
think) on the backs of exit signs. Anyway, last Saturday, I spotted 7 (!)
kestrels during two round trips-so some may have been repeats. Amazing how
inconspicuious they are unless you're really looking - they can blend in
with the mourning doves and pigeons-tho they're much smaller than pigeons.
We pulled off in each case to verify (careful- if you're trying this at
home!).

I also saw what I thought was two Cooper's hawks or perhaps one Cooper's and
one Sharpie, in Erwin and Kingsport, respectively.

And last week I had two white -breasted nuthatches in my backyard-always
nice to see!

The bluebirds are back in their boxes along the Green Belt in Kingsport, if
they indeed went anywhere. Last year they were at some point subplanted by
tree swallows -a claim my mother wouldn't believe because her copy of
Peterson doesn't allow tree swallows in these parts. However, she has an
extremely ancient copy of Peterson-probably a first edition! Things
change....mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...

And my botany class almost ran over a ruffed grouse on Unaka Mt. a few weeks
ago as it was crossing the road. I see a Great Blue Heron or two standing in
or flying over Reedy Creek almost every day while visiting T. Finucane in
his current residence-also killdeer in the parking lot.

Oh yeah, A flicker in my front yard this morning-OK I'LL SHUT UP NOW! :D

 Yours, Marion Finucane
