Tom Horsch and I brided in Sullivan, Johnson and Carter
counties (TN) today.

Great Blue Herons back at rookery on Pemberton Road
near Darter's Store in Sullivan. Three nests seen and
at least two with birds on them.

Quarry Bog, Shady Valley, Johnson Co.
        Red-shouldered Hawk
        Common Snipe 4
        American Kestrel 2
Eastern Meadowlark 2 (maybe wintering leftovers)
dead skunk in creek (what happened to him?)
Middlebrook Lake, Bristol, TN (Sullivan)
        Coots 3
two nesting cavities of Belted Kingfisher (I don't remember
                these from previous visits)
Farm pond on Trammell Road, Bristol, TN
        Green-winged Teal 3
Musick's Campground (South Holston lake, Sullivan TN)
        Ring-billed Gull (I counted 486)
        Pied-billed Grebe 5
        Lesser Scaup 7

The U.S. Forest Service had a control burn going in the
National Forest which covered almost all forest lands that
could be seen across from Musick's Campground. The
entire lakeshore was burning big time! A U.S. Forest
Service hellicopter was patroling the burn all along the
lakesore, watching for "skips" that could get away. At
5:30 p.m. there was considerable fire, a massive cloud
of smoke hiding the mountain and much of the foothill
ridges. Tom's friend, Jill, called on the cellphone and
said the smoke from the fire was very evident in
Damascus, Va. Modern miracles. Smoky Bear just
couldn't cut it. They've even taken his photo off of
signs and billboards :-)
