Jim Phillips:

My goodness! Two Bald Eagles perched within three
feet of each other is certainly an indication that they
may be mated. At South Holston Lake we don't find
two sitting that close even when we have two or three
birds around. They sit close in larger numbers on
the wintering grounds at Reelfoot, etc.

The best thing I know to look for is one or both of the
birds breaking sticks out of the top of trees with their
feet or beaks while on the wing. I have not seen this
but they are reported to crack them out on the wing
and carry them to nests. This behavior was seen at
Watauga Lake in Northeast Tennessee a few years
ago but it was sort of thought it was a bird showing
mating behavior that didn't really have a mate around.
Maybe a young bird strutting his/her stuff.

I would also keep a map of all places an eagle is
seen in the area and see if you can work it down to
a common center, etc. You could then look for a
nest in a limited area and you can probably see it
without too much trouble. At least I hope so.

Good luck. Glad those Bristol Bird Club gals are
spending their money at Pipestem and visiting
the good old WVa state park. Our club had some
really good times with our two weekend winter
field trips there a few years back.

Why don't you come down to Burke's Garden on
Feb. 16 and get all caught up by visiting and birding
for the Golden Eagles and Rough-legged Hawks
with us? We'd love to have you and see you again.

Let's go birding.....
