Dave and area birders:
Let's use the FSR Channel 11, Privacy Code 22,
for the Burke's Garden field trip on Feb. 16.
We shouldn't have trouble promoting that.
That is the recommendation of the American
Birding Association for field use nationwide by
birders.
If we do that, everyone coming in or just being
there can find other birders, good birds and
coordinate vehicles not only moving in a line
but on other roads. At least those within
a couple of miles of one another will have some
chance of monitoring and communciating with
others.
Areas like Burke's Garden, the South Holston
Lake sites such as Musick's Campground,
TWRA Boat Ramp and the South Holston
Weir Dam lend themeselves well to such
coordination. We will eventually find them
very useful at Rankin Bottoms, Whitetop
Mt. Rogers and Roan Mountain as well
as naturalist rallies. We used FSR and
the 11-22 channel in my parties on the
Bristol Christmas Bird Count as well
as Glade Springs Christmas count.
Birders who do not yet carry FSR
units should look into a purchase at
Walmart, K-mart, etc. The are very
cheap.
I got into the FSRs after having seen
Jeff Ol' Coot Wilson and Mark Greene
put them to good use while birding
for the Harlequin Duck at the weir.
I am going to promote this more widely
on state list servers.
