BBC Snippet
Sept. 21, 1961, Dr. Joseph J. Murray, Sr. (1890-1973) was the
speaker for BBC Hotel Bristol banquet. Dr. Murray returned
to Bristol Sept. 25, 1964 to again be the BBC Annual Banquet
speaker.
While here in September 1964, BBC members hosted
Dr. Murray to the Mendota Hawk Lookout for his first ever visit
there and he and his wife spent several hours counting hawks
with BBC members.
He was a charter member of the Virginia Society of Ornithology
and from 1930 to 1969 was editor of The Raven, the VSO journal
of ornithology.
A Presbyterian minister from Lexington, Va., he was made an
Elective Member of the American Ornithologists' Union. From
1936 to 1946 he served as Secretary of the National Audubon
Society.
Dr. Murray was the author of the 1952 Check-list of the Birds
of Virginia (the state's first such checklist). He also authored
the Birds of Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1957 and a rare
book, Wild Wings (1947, by John Knox Press of Richmond, Va).
