I met up with seven members from the Blue Ridge Bird Club from Virginia and had
a good trip to Burkes Garden, Va this past Sat (Jan 12th). We found only one
very obliging Golden Eagle which gave us some good looks while perched
approximately 100 yards away from us and then taking flight and soaring above
our heads for quite some time.
We also found Red-headed Woodpeckers, Loggerhead Shrikes, Horned lark and
Green-winged Teal for other highlights of the trip. We also found a grey phase
Screech Owl sitting in a tree hole sunning on this beautiful day right beside
the road.
The weather was about as good as you can get in Burkes Garden in the winter
time, no wind, sunny with temps in the lower 30's to mid 40's. A very
delighful day spent with good friends and seeing lots of good birds.
No Rough-legged Hawks were seen on this trip.
