Today (Saturday) members of the Buchanan County Bird Club joined members of the
Russell County Bird Club in birding a southern section of Russell County. The
outing was organized by RCBC members, Tom and Laverne Hunter of Lebanon. Tom
led the 16 birders over areas covered by mixed woodland and pasture land.

Two Loggerhead Shrikes were found early in the day. They were soon followed
by the sighting of 2 Golden Eagles. One was an adult and one was in sub-adult I
plumage. It was also a day for Red-tailed Hawks with 16 being sighted. A very
unusual sighting of a Red-shouldered Hawk was a pleasant surprise, as that
species is not often found in the southern part of Russell County.

With 39 species sighted followed by a great meal at the home of Tom and
Laverne, the finishing touch for a very enjoyable birding day was to stop by
the home of Bob Riggs in Lebanon to see the female Rufous Hummer that has been
there since October 19, 2006. Within minutes the bird made an appearance and
perched in bright sunlight, giving great looks to observers. It was a fitting
ending to a day of bright sunny weather, good birds and good companionship.
Those participating today were Don Carrier and son, Christian, Tom and
Laverne Hunter, Richard and Pam Kretz, Fred and Janice Martin, Roger and Lynda
Mayhorn, Bob and Jean Montgomery, David Raines, Bob Riggs, Jerry and Jane
Thornhill, Dave and Diana Worley
