Michelle,

If you are coming down 11w from Bristol/Blountville. The location for the
Red-shouldered Hawks first: as you are coming down 11W (Stone Drive in
Kingsport) just after you pass Lowe's on your left you need to get in or be in
the leftmost lane; as you pass under the Wilcox drive overpass you will see a
redlight; turn left here onto American Way. Go to the end of this little road
and you will find a small parking lot. This is the area where I see the hawks
most often (although since last year they are not there every time you go
there, early morning just after sunrise is best time).

Merlins:
Oak Hill Cemetery: come down 11W from Bristol/Blountville and down Stone Drive
until you see a Putt-Putt mini golf course on your right. Pass this and then
turn right onto Truxton Drive (this will be the third road you come to after
passing Putt-Putt and immediately before the exit for Hwy 36 (Lynn Garden
Drive)). The entrance for the cemetery will be probably less than a mile on
your right. Enter thru the cemetery gates and take the first left toward the
north side of the cemetery. Look in the tops of tall conifers back to the
south as you drive along that road. Sometimes in the morning. Almost always in
the late afternoon just before dark.

Email me if you need better directions.

  Rick,
Would you mind sending out some driving directions to the Oak Hill Cemetary?
The name is familiar but I am not sure of the location.

Also the location where you found the Red-shouldered Hawk eating cat chow?
Would love to catch a glimpse of this individual dining on cat food;-)

  Thanks,

One Merlin was present at Oak Hill Cemetery at around 8:00 am this morning
(Jan 16). I believe the very best time to see the birds is around 4:30 pm
until dusk, when they are usually found perched in the tops of tall Spruce
trees on the north side of the cemetery.
