Area Birders,
I kept records again this past fall of the migration though and around my yard
on Compton Mt here in Buchanan County. A couple of days ago I got all of the
data together. The records were kept from August 23 to October 30 with 47 days
of actual data gathering. It turns out that I had 30 warbler species to pass
through with 616 individual warblers. I also had 43 other migratory species
numbering 1380 individual birds. That's a total of 73 species and a cumulative
total of 1996 birds. Some species that were not recorded this year were
Connecticut Warbler (observed here only once before), Orange-crowned Warbler (
Occasionally seen during migration) Prairie Warbler ( usually observed )
Louisana Waterthrush, Northern Waterthrush, Prothonotary Warbler, Swainson's
Warbler ( these species have never been observed on the mountain top during
fall migration. It may be the elevation). No Great-crested Flycatchers were
observed, and only one Eastern Kingbird, which was very unusual. The numbers of
Catharus thrushes were down this year and no Veerys were recorded. Also no
Warbling Vireos were logged, but that is not unusual for the area.
Following is a list of species and numbers. (If some species are in bold type,
that's just a copy/paste problem).
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
