Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area unit at intersection of
Highway 348, North Mohawk Road, and South Mohawk Road (LCBWMA-348/MR);
Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management
Area (JBR);
various back roads in western Greene County;
a few areas in eastern Greene County
I had a good day today in Greene County. Highlights included--
Ross's Goose (1 white phase bird at intersection of Highway 340 and
Turner Lane, feeding in a field with Canada Geese and Mallards; viewed
with binos at 10x and by scope at 40x for over 15 minutes);
Canada Goose (91);
Mallard (157);
American Black Duck;
Northern Harrier (4);
Cooper's Hawk (2);
Red-shouldered Hawk (1 immature on Highway 340 0.2 mile east of Highway
348);
Red-tailed Hawk (12);
American Kestrel (4);
Wild Turkey (99, at 3 sites);
Northern Bobwhite (Glades Road);
Ring-billed Gull (4 at intersection of Highway 340 and Turner Lane);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (2 in the vicinity of West Greene High School);
Brown Thrasher (LCBWMA-348/MR);
American Pipit;
Palm Warbler (JBR);
Common Yellowthroat (LCBWMA-348/MR; heard calling at least 13 times but
never seen);
Savannah Sparrow (6);
Swamp Sparrow (15);
Eastern Meadowlark (105).
Directions to the site where the Ross's Goose was found--
Take exit 15 off Interstate 81 (in Hamblen County).
Go southeast on Fish Hatchery Road (Highway 340) a mile or so and cross
into Greene County.
Continue another three miles or so and pass Highway 348 (on the left).
Go another half mile or so on Highway 340 and look left into the large
field at the intersection with Turner Lane. A scope is recommended.
As far as I know, the only other Ross's Goose record for Greene County
was on December 18-19, 2003--3 white phase birds on Jim Kirk Road.
