[Bristol-Birds] waterbirds and others in Bristol region (1/17)

Rack Cross and Wallace Coffey
birding Mon. Jan. 17, 2005
eastern Sullivan County, Tn. and Washignton County to Abingdon, Va.
Va. Rt. 75 at intersection Painter Creek Road:
2 Red-tailed Hawks perched on same limb shoulder-to-shoulder (barley a few 
inches between them).  Nesting season can't be far away.  Temp. 20 degrees. 
Strong breeze.

Musick's Campground:
Common Loon - 1
UID grebes - 5 (light colored, too difficult under conditons, even with scope).
Ring-billed Gull-6
dozen White-crowned Sparrow at campground feeders.
excellent set of duck decoys just off tip of Egret Island (two hunters).  
Decoy's a good mixture of scaup, mallards and a male pintail.  Set loosely over 
a 150 feet of length.  Very realistic distribution.

South Holston Dam overlook:
Pied-billed Grebe  - 3
Ring-billed Gull - 11

South Fork Holston River Weir Dam:
Bufflehead - 100+ est.
Lesser Scaup - 3
American Wigeon - 20
Redhead - 1female
Hybrid Redhead x ? Ring-necked Duck - 1 male
Mute Swan - 1
Mallard - 20

Trammell Road pond, just off King College Road along Sinking Creek  (Sullivan 
Co. TN):
Green-winged Teal - 18 (mostly adult males)

Middlebrook Lake, Bristol, TN:
Ring-billed Gull - 325
Gadwall - 1
Ring-necked Duck - 10
Hooded Merganser - 20
Canada Goose - 35
American Coot - 6
Killdeer - 2
Mallard - many
Black Duck - 1
Mute Swan - 2

Sutter's Pond, near Bristol Country Club at base of The Knobs, Sullivan Co. Tn.:
Pintain - 1 adult male
Mallard - 32
Ring-necked Duck - 5
American Wigeon - 3

north of Goose Pimple Junction just off Jonesborough Rd. in Washington Co., VA.:
half a dozen or so Eastern Meadowlarks.

Virginia Creeper Trailhead Pond, Abingdon, VA.:
Canada Goose - 176  (at least 7 with aluminum bird band on leg)
Killdeer - 2
Mallard - 20
Great Blue Heron - 1

Searched all day of Cackling Goose among Canada Geese but no luck.  Green 
Springs Pond nothing.  One large farm pond at Abingeon 90 percent frozen.  
Otherwise most water open.  Temp. in Bristol at 7 a.m.   13.5 degrees F.  
Overnight low 13.3 degrees.

Weather station readings at Middlebrook Lake, Sullivan Co., TN for Jan. 17:

Humidity %  33.7  Max  84.8
Windy (mph)  NNW 21.0 at 4:42 a.m. max.
Daily Rain   none
